Seriously, he should come to south Oshawa -- the foodbank I visited yesterday -- there's poverty here. I see malnutrition in Nunavut -- people there remember mass starvation in the 1960s. Go to Church in Cape Dorset -- the prayers focus on having enough food for the winter. And those prayers are not pro forma.
Canada is a wealthy country but we still have poverty.

Can you define poverty? I ask because apparently 10% of BC children are living in poverty. Does poverty mean no cell phone? Again I ask because many of the people at the food bank have cell phones. It seems to me that starving in Nunavut is poverty. Having to make a decision between a cell phone or cheerios for your kids (and choosing the cell phone) is just stupidity.

The cell phone is often an essential piece of equipment for getting out of poverty. A person can be available for interviews and employment because they can take incoming calls. It is possible to get a prepaid plan without a credit check and it can cost as little as $10 per month. (Check petrocanada mobility etc.) An address, email account, and a telephone number are essentials today.
Perhaps you'd prefer the poor use pay phones? (Are there any left?) You know they can't get landlines.
Incidentally I'm in the Durham riding, just north of Oshawa. There are 4,000 lone parent families in our riding 75% of them are headed by women. Care to guess how many of them "poor"? (Check statscan)

ReplyDeleteCheck Stats Can for what? The calculate a low income cut-off, not poverty. The LICO is a measure of people living below a certain percentage of the average income. If everyone got a 100% raise the LICO would still calculate the same number of people below that average - that's not a measure of poverty.
ReplyDeleteThe definition of poverty in Canada has become nothing more than a joke played on people who really live in poverty in the third world. If you want to discuss low incomes or something that's fine but to use a loaded word like poverty to describe a family that uses cell phones, has cable TV, and whose children are obese is outrageous.

You have not quoted Alexander correctly, nor has your source at the National Post.
Alexander uses the definition of poverty as "two dollars a day" of income and he uses the World Bank as his source.
In fact half the world's population lives on less than $2 per day. That statistic comes from the Population Reference Bureau.
