Well, of course you can. Parties evolve over time -- today's Conservatives would hardly elect Joe Clark, for example.
Still, I was struck how, during the election in Oshawa, the NDP candidate repeatedly demanded that Canada "make the rich pay".

"New Democrats left their convention Sunday united behind their leader but split on what the party needs to do to attract more voters to propel it into office.
After heated debates, delegates at the party's national convention in Vancouver kept the door open to merging with the Liberal party and chose to keep the word "socialism" in their constitution — at least for now.
The socialist-heavy preamble to the NDP's constitution will be sent to party executives for them to mull over, after party president Brian Topp moved to delay a vote that would have exposed deep divisions within the party.
Passions had already erupted on the floor with Winnipeg MP Pat Martin telling 1,500 delegates — some of whom booed him — that the NDP's anchor, its socialist label, was outdated and holding the party back.
"All we have to do is a few simple things, to change our language so we don't scare people," Mr. Martin said.
"We want a modern, progressive, majority, social democratic government," he added.
Barry Weisleder, the chair of the NDP's socialist caucus, told delegates erasing the word socialism was a betrayal of the party's roots and was only being done to tell the "Canadian establishment" the NDP would not rock the boat.
He urged them to vote against the proposed mainstream language, suggesting that NDP founder Tommy Douglas would be rolling in his grave.
"He would say: No! No! No!" Mr. Weisleder said, to thunderous applause from the room.
"Brothers and sisters, you can take socialism out of the preamble but you can't take socialism out of the NDP," he said."

Perhaps Chris Buckley was suggesting that the marginal tax rates on the richest Canadians should be increased. I don't find that quaint. I agree with it completely.
Harper is a SOCIALIST.
Canadians have been denied their basic rights as a people.
That is to be free of a political class that is above the law an corrupt.
I keep asking why only small time criminals are in jail and no big fish in the Canadian political scene.
Canadians need a REVOLUTION to throw out this CORRUPT that allows the police to be in bed with their political masters.
This disgrace needs to end and only a revolution will stop it.
The NDP being SOCIALIST has NOTHING to do with the AVERAGE Canadian.
All the Politicians need to go. They are all CORRUPT and DIRTY.
