Gaza -- More views

Interesting piece from Asia Times Online -- the opening paragraphs show Bennett's political position but the article goes on to deal with the practical issues related to the fighting.

Ground realities in Gaza

By Richard M Bennett

Israel's patience with Hamas finally snapped on December 27, 2008. The government of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Tel Aviv finally took the momentous decision that it was no longer possible politically, militarily or morally to endure the constant barrage of Hamas missiles on its citizens in the south of Israel.

This closely followed the deliberate refusal by Hamas on December 19 to renew the already shaky ceasefire of the previous six months.

International condemnation of Israel's actions swiftly followed. However to many neutral observers and indeed to the majority of Israelis, much of this wave of criticism appears to be both cynical and unjust.

For many of those states and individuals at the forefront of the protests have displayed a noticeable lack of concern over Hamas' terrorist attacks.

Similarly those same critics have shown a spectacular indifference to the plight of nearly a million Israeli civilians forced to live under the constant threat of Hamas missiles and suicide bombers.

Hamas had simply pushed its luck too far by continuing to deliberately target soft Israeli civilian targets.

  1. Imagine the US illegally occupied Canada for forty year, bulldozed their houses, annexed their land, vivisected their territory with settlements and checkpoints, and cut them off completely from the outside world for voting in a government they didn´t like. I´m sure Rick and others would be condemning his fellow Canadians if they dared to fight back and praising the restraint of the Americans for only killing hundreds and not thousands durin their ´surgical´collective punishment campaigns. But then there aways will be Quizlings out there...

  2. Forget the Israeli and Arab people for a minute. Imagine our border with USA, imagine the Americans launched several thousand missiles into Canada, bombarding our schools, malls and neighbor hoods. Who in their right minds would protest against Canada for invading USA soil to end the constant shelling??? The palestinian people need to stand up and rid their Country from a terrorist organization that hides weapons and rockets in houses, Mosques and schools. We need to stand back and forget the religion and nationalities involved in these conflicts, and focus more on the day to day conflict leading up to these current events. How can people sit in their houses in such a densely populated place as Gazza and not wonder where the constant roar of mortars and rockets are going, when they fly over houses and schools towards Israel.

  3. Lets get some facts straight: 1. Southern Israel, was always part of the nation, and never part of any territories, is home to major cities, universities, industry and close to 1 million people. 2. For EIGHT years, this area has been bombarded daily. Did you know that more missiles have been fired from Hamas terrorists on this area in the last year than all of the rockety bombs fired at London during WWII (1359 source google)? 3. Would you put up with being bombed for 8 years? And how would you respond? What if the bombs landed on Laval, Lasalle or Cote Des Neiges. You can go to school, you cant shot, you cant walk the dog or go play hockey... your are in a war zone. 4. Hamas hides their weapons under mosques, in civilian locations and uses innocent people as shields. How should Israel respond? How can you negotiate with terrorists whose leadership have all fled to Syria, Lebanon and Iran?

  4. After shifting away slightly under Dion and Martin it is good to see Ignatieff take the Liberal Party back to being staunch allies of Israeli. The U.S. and Canada have always supported the only true democracy in the middle east and Ignatieff, as a human rights expert, understands the dynamics involved here. Finally!

  5. Iggy and Harper are the same damn thing. They are rightwing puppets of Zionists.

  6. Iggy supports Israeli's legitimate right to defend themselves. I am glad he continues to support this, as well as a ceasefire, and condemns Hamas attacks. We once again have a leader that is moving the Liberals back to a more reasonable pro-Israeli position.

  7. I agree -- Israel is not perfect, nowhere is, but it is a legitimate democratic nation with a right to defend itself. I am glad we have a Leader who recognizes that (and I am glad our Prime Minister does too). I disagree that Dion was different --
I spoke to him personally on Israel and he always recognized Israel as a friend and ally of Canada. Bluntly, as between the Conservatives and the Liberals there is not too much difference; we both want two peaceful and secure states.

  8. James, nobody is denying that Israel has a right to defend itself.

What they are wondering is how the babies and schoolchildren being killed in Gaza ever constituted a threat.
