Effectiveness of incarceration

A reader's query about effectiveness of incarceration leads me to repost a link I posted some months ago:

  2. This is the difference is attitudes between the USA (yes Dem's and Repubs) and Canada (Libs not Cons).

A gunrunner that brought over 200 weapons to Canada and sold them to a Chinese gangster is look at TEN years in jail.

The American prosecutor said he has a duty to "protect" Canadians and not allow Americans to cause Canada havoc with guns.

He wants 10 years in an American pen with no parole.

    But................

Morton, here in Canada where the guns would have been used to kill Canadians a liberal judge would have given him 2-5 years. Tops. And he would have gotten APR which would have meant he would have only had to serve 1/6 or 6 months of his sentence.

He would have been out in 6 months to 10 months.

back on the street to sell guns, drugs, who knows maybe even kill a guy.

But in the USA, the Americans have to protect Canada by giving him a 10 year, no parole sentence.

    Which is better Morton?

Do you think the guy in the USA should get 10 years or a more Liberal 6 to 10 months with some parole on top?

    Which do you prefer?
