  1. "Voters in Switzerland have rejected a proposal to give themselves more annual leave in a national referendum.

The plan would have given workers six weeks off a year, but business groups warned about the cost to the economy.

In other referendums, voters in Zurich agreed to the creation of "sex boxes" where prostitutes can work. In Geneva, residents voted to tighten restrictions on street protests.

Referendums are a key part of Switzerland's direct democracy system.

The Swiss frequently have their say on changes to laws, budgets, or any issue that 100,000 citizens say they feel strongly about."

So the Swiss get to have their say ion laws, budgets, or any issue where they can get 100 thousand signatures.

But here in Canada, we get none of that.

One vote every four years is not democracy , but rather tyranny.

I think we should look at the Swiss for a better model than what we are forced to lived with here in Canada.

  2. Indeed, and with the internet direct democracy is more practical than ever. I suppose the real question is, would the public take the time to learn the issues or should that be left to representatives -- or, what sort of issues should (or can) be decided by direct democracy?
