The navigating officer at the helm of the Queen of the North ferry has been charged with criminal negligence in the deaths of two passengers killed in the 2006 sinking of the B.C. Ferries ship.

The charge against Karl Lilgert, announced today by the Criminal Justice Branch of the attorney general’s ministry, follows what the branch called a “detailed and involved” assessment of police evidence.

The branch said Mr. Lilgert has been charged on the basis of being the navigating officer responsible for the vessel at the time of the incident on March. 22, 2006.
“The available evidence does not support the laying of charges against anyone other than Mr. Lilgert,” said a statement.
