Tim Horton's employee fired for giving timbit away -- What Not To Do

Oh dear.

Talk about bad press. A single mom fired from a Tim's for giving a baby of a regular customer a 15 cent Timbit.

The only thing that could make it worse would be if the single mom was disabled.

Now, one assumes there is a back story and some other version of reality here (nobody gets fired over 15 cents) but gosh, doesn't anyone tell Tim's managers about "cause for termination"?

Or maybe a very basic course in public relations?

Anyway, a great public relations story (I can already imagine the calls to "Boycott Tim's") and it'll be interesting to see how Tim's reacts to this media kurfuffle. Maybe a reinstatement of the mom (they may need staff in Afghanistan)? And then fire the manager? (But what if there was cause???)

Not only was she fired but if it was because of "theft" she can't even qualify for e.i.

So does the Governemnt of Canada believe that firing a single mother for giving away a 15 cent Tim Bit just cause for denyig e.i. benefits?

This story is even more interesting because every Tim's I pass seems to need help and they have big signs saying benefits flexible shcedule etc.

This won't help them get staff, which is probably far more damaging than losing a few customers.

Just went to Tim's homepage and apparently they reinstated her and apologized. Here is their press release

Tim Hortons responds to firing of staff member
In regards to the recent situation with the termination of a staff member in London, Ontario;

Unfortunately the action of the manager of this location was not appropriate nor grounds for dismissal. With an apology from management Ms. Lilliman has been rehired by the franchisee.

We sincerely apologize to our customers for this unfortunate incident.

I found your blog when I "Googled" Tim Horton's. This is appalling. I also found another Blog on Blogspot.com, about how a couple was overcharged at a Cornwall Tim Horton's. Tim Horton's apparently refused to resolve the situation. Here is the link: http://timhortonswhistleblower.blogspot.com/. What do you think?
