The end of the Liberal Party is near!!!

An election brings out the partisan.

I'm not someone who looks to attack, say, a Conservative for being one. Yes, I'm a Liberal but let's look at issues not people. In fairness many Conservatives are like that too. Most people are interested in politics because they love Canada and want to help the nation; and in this I believe rests most Liberals, Conservatives, NDP and even, from their viewpoint, Bloc (of course only the Liberals are correct in their views but that's another matter...).

But we have an election and the whispering campaigns all start.

And a big one going around is that Harper, being brilliant, is calling an election now, even though he can't win, because it will destroy the Liberal Party. How? Well the Liberals will lose, but not by much, and will immediately remove Dion. There will be a brutal intraParty blood bath and a crippled, bankrupt Liberal Party will be destroyed, once and for all, next election.

Hmmn. Apart from assuming Liberals are politically stupid (I suppose the Conservatives might think that) this analysis requires Liberals to have the ethics of Mack the Knife.

It's a silly Conservative fantasy.

So why, for real, is Harper calling an election and why is his team spreading this bizarre fantasy?

First why now an election?

Because the economy is tanking and people will (fair or not) blame the Conservatives. They will remember the Liberals and no deficit and a big surplus. More, the Conservative face the 'in and out' scandal and maybe a Walkerton type inquiry into tainted meat.

So why the whispering campaign?

To explain why Harper is calling an election he won't win.

I has been Harper's wish for a long time to get rid of the Liberal Party..why is he suing the Liberals for around 3 billion (Cadman ) He will get so much out of them, they will reel for years and not come back for some time. Meanwhile, those goons are going to bury Canada as well.

Well, did someone get this wrong..Anon, it is 3 million not Billion. Other than that, I agree with you. I hope that Harper does not get his wish..is he losing it? The Liberals were the ones that made this country great., and he is trying to undo it.

I don't believe for one second that the reason Canada is great is because of any political party. We're great because the people are great and we work hard to improve ourselves, not because some political blowhard got into office by sucking up for 20 or 30 years.

Manuel, your wrong! to say a country is great for the people and not the government who runs it is absurd. Look around the world and what makes Iran or North Korea not so great, is that the people? no it is the political party running/ruining the country. Canadians better wise up quickly as to what is happening her with this Harper Conservative Government. On the world stage we have been criticized for being obstructive and damaging to various causes that Canadians used to hold dear to them, things like global warming, world poverty, and proper diplomatic procedures. Canadians may soon find this country we used to call great, not so great anymore, maybe even more like a regime than anything else. We as Canadians need to stand up for the country we love, and the best political party to do that is the Liberals, who have made us who we are or have had an enormous role to that effect, Get out and support the Liberals anyway you can!

Harper wants to call an election while the Cadman suit is before the courts. Then, whenever he is asked about the Cadman affair, (say at the leader's debate), he can decline to comment, because the matter is before the courts. After the election (when he hopes he has a majority) he can drop the lawsuit. This is the whole purpose of the lawsuit -- to provide him a means to keep from answering difficult questions during the campaign.

The Liberals won't be going anywhere ... however perhaps a uniting of the Left in a new party (Liberal Democrats, anyone?) down the road would rid both current parties (Libs and NDP) of their worst characteristics: arrogance and entitlement in the Liberal party, and the impracticality that pervades the New Democrats.

There are many policies and philisophical positions to admire in both parties. I would consider myself a classical liberal, but because of the ethos of the current Liberal party, I simply have not been able to support them since the 1997 election.

As for the NDP, their unrealistic policy positions and economic naivete make it a non-starter.
