Harper can remake Supreme Court

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is positioned to do something U.S. President Barack Obama can only dream of -- remake his nation's Supreme Court more to his liking.

Seven of the Supreme Court of Canada's nine members are now eligible (but not required) to retire, with an eighth eligible to go in 2011.

Harper has already made two well-received appointments to the court, but if he keeps his grip on power for another four years, he could appoint a majority of the court.

I hope he never sees the light of day to do it. The Supreme Court will do every whim for the Ultra right. I think they have to do what he Constitution says...watch out..we will never have the same Country again. He has to go.

Harper has the opportunity to bring much needed balance to the court.

Seems some liberals are worried Harper will "stack" the court like FDR. A practice reserved for liberals.

Perhaps the Liberals that are genuine in their concern that Harper will "stack" the courts could tell us the names of the judges they fear.

Anyone named to the SCC in the next four years is likely a judge now.So who is it they fear?

My point is, no credible Liberal will give any names. Why? Because the whole premise is a crock.

bottom line, only Libs can be trusted.Typical arrogance.

Actually, if Harper picks from Court of Appeal judges he cannot go far wrong -- but certainly he can slant the court to more small "c" conservative -- but, on the other hand, that's part of the benefit of being in government -- which is another reason to work for the next election

Hey Rotterdam,

Those left of the ultra hard core right Conservative Reform Alliance Party, those you might call "liberal" (not capital L) do not want these changes. That is, the majority of the population.

This is a chance for Harper to remake things so that he can keep his power, by all and any means necessary.

I'd certainly rather have appointments that are more closely aligned with the values of the country, because one step right of Harper's government is pure and unadulterated fascism.

You do mean "unstack" dont you? Surely there should be judges appointed by Conservatives. Is there a law that we need left leaning judges to be in the majority.
