There is a concept known as "libel chill". A newspaper or other media outlet knows something but does not publish it for fear of being sued for libel.
There are suggestions that is in play now in the Helena Guergis affair. Look at the excerpts from today's Globe below -- the paper has information it isn't sharing.
Now I do not believe the Prime Minister's office is involved in any of this.
Say what you will but Stephen Harper won't be a party to some sleazy criminal business deal -- withhold documents or reroute campaign monies perhaps, commercial fraud no way. Harper is hyper partisan but that's where the line is drawn -- he's not 'bent' and I would be very surprised to find others in the caucus who are.
Anyway, look at the clip below and decide for yourself:
"A cloud of criminal allegations is left hanging over the Conservative government after Stephen Harper called in the Mounties to investigate unspecified activities involving Helena Guergis, the former junior minister for women and the wife of controversial ex-MP Rahim Jaffer.
The Prime Minister made his surprise move after receiving information that is linked "peripherally" to Mr. Jaffer's business dealings, a source said.
...
Though some media reports suggested the affair concerned Mr. Jaffer's misuse of Ms. Guergis's office for his business affairs, there were other, stronger, indications that a much more serious breach was involved."

More like the usual Liberal/MSM drive by smear and innuendo, if the Liberals/MSM know something to be true at least have the balls to come out with it, otherwise shut your stinking traps until such time as the RCMP finishes it's investigation and Crown determines whether or not there is enough evidence to proceed with charges.
Harry Balls
Too bad Harry doesn't have the balls to use his real name. Reminds me of the courage and honour displayed by the Con government and the people in its ranks who suddenly 'quit' for no reason at all. It's all a liberal plot!
Being an anonymous coward when posting is just a Conbot trend. Noone would really want their real name to a statement so stupid.
How did the drug possession charges get thrown out.
Last night the PMO fed CTV mentioned something about the cops claimed the coke was in his pants but it was actually in his jacket inferring that this was the reason that the case was plea bargained.
Was this reported before?
I see anon still likes Guergis, defending her to he end..No one shut up when Harper was sending the RCMP to investigate the Liberals, when it came to Income Trusts, it was blasted all over.
> Now I do not believe the Prime Minister's office is involved in any of this.
Really? Is there any basis for this? Is there ANY evidence that woudl support such a conclusion?
The PM is very controlling of his edia message. Evidence from past performance suggests he is very involved. Certainly, there are grounds for suspicion.
How did the drug possession charges get thrown out?
You might want to ask Ontario's Liberal Attorney General that question.
"No one shut up when Harper was sending the RCMP to investigate the Liberals, when it came to Income Trusts, it was blasted all over."
An NDP MP with the first name of Judy and last name starting with W. is the one who filed the complaint with the RCMP over the Liberals handling of whether or not they would change the tax rules on Income Trusts.
Why is it that Liberals have such a propensity for spewing lies?
Goodale meets with RCMP over income trust probe
Last Updated: Tuesday, January 3, 2006 | 10:19 PM ET
CBC News
Finance Minister Ralph Goodale met with the RCMP for more than an hour Tuesday to discuss the income trust investigation, a probe that has hit the Liberals during a tough election campaign.
"From my point of view it was a very good constructive discussion of the issues involved and the RCMP will now continue to do their work," Goodale said about the meeting.
"Obviously it's not a normal part of the campaign but it's a circumstance that has to be dealt with and I'm very glad and happy to deal with it because I'm very confident about my position."
Goodale has insisted that he was not involved in any wrongdoing and has resisted opposition calls for him to step down as finance minister during the investigation.
The RCMP is investigating opposition allegations that the decision on tax policy regarding income trusts was leaked prior to its Nov. 23 announcement. Opposition politicians point to a flurry of market trading in the hours before the announcement and claim inside information benefited Liberal-friendly traders and investors.
The Mounties, in confirming the criminal investigation, noted in a statement that they had "no evidence of wrongdoing or illegal activity on the part of anyone associated to this investigation," including Goodale.
The RCMP will meet Wednesday morning in Winnipeg with NDP finance critic Judy Wasylycia-Leis, who made the initial complaint to police.

My thinking for the PMO not being involved is just an instinct. I don't see Harper as motivated by money -- and that is what seems to be what the issue is over. But I have no evidence at all.
I agree with you assessment James and if there proves to be no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by Guergis the MSM and some others will have a lot to answer for.
Downes, I agree. Past performance shows Harper to be reaching for his own life-line now. When RCMP raided the PMO over election illegality issues, they weren't exactly invited. He didn't call them when Max's National Security documents were in possesion of how many unknown, untold people? Oh, and when Harper was investigated for bribing a dying MP, I don't think he called RCMP then, either, so why now? He hopes the bus is big enough. Adscam, an event, is not even in the same league as the sometimes criminal, and always suspect MODALITY of the CON-RIGHT in this country. Based on past performance.
"When RCMP raided the PMO over election illegality issues, they weren't exactly invited."
Who tipped off the CBC to that smear?
And why has Elections Canada lost every court battle and is wasting more taxpayer dollars in a futile effort?
All parties practiced the very same thing, yet Mr. Mayrand saw fit to only go after the Conservative Party.
In Max's case he paid the price and note those documents were not marked secret nor confidential.
The Cadman affair, what a load of BS, who would provide life insurance to a person with terminal cancer? Another baseless Liberal smear attempt.
ADSCAM, the RCMP has continued it's investigations and are not as yet complete. Liberal operatives have been jailed, fined , possibly more to come.
Wow anonymous is trying their hardest to change the topic. Why not bring up some scandals from the early twentieth century Anonymous. Those railroad barons! The scoundrels...
Though it is funny to see Anonymous argue themselves into irrelevance again and again.... They must still be steamed about that Prime Minister Laurier.
"Being an anonymous coward when posting is just a Conbot trend. Noone would really want their real name to a statement so stupid."
Hey Gene, you liberal stooge, why don't you use YOUR real name?
Gene, if you actually bothered to read these posts before blurting out your nonsense you'd see that LK @12:07 PM brought those points up.
Very feeble.
Right after you Harrison S Balls. Who says I'm a Liberal stooge? Just because I dont like the Harpercons doesnt automatically put me in the other camp.
By the way, don't you think it's a tad hypocritical of you to be demanding I post a comment in my real name (if Gene Rayburn isnt that) when you and anonymous coward hide behind pseudonyms?
You're chickenhawk inspired machismo is... pretty funny actually.
Oh Anonymous, feeble would be a compliment to the dribble you leak
Gene Rayburn, if you're not a liberal stooge you're doing a good imitation. And there's nothing wrong with using a pseudonym especially when there's a bunch of crazed leftists out there.
I see Harper as rather Nixon-like. Perhaps he has an aversion to doing things illegally (like bribing the RCMP - and Harry Balls brought one up - re the RCMP/Goodale fiasco, pretty bad when their examples defeat their own argument) - however, back on topic - Harper interprets the legal system to have more than one tier, and what may be illegal for you and I isn't so much for him. It's a cue little trick he plays with his mind to justify his actions.
My thoughts - it's spin. He's "tough on crime" even against Conservatives (especially if they lack penises) and he's durn well gunta prove it dere pardner!
So he can say, whilst pointing at his chest, "I called the cops on her! See, I'm not partisan, partial, and I am so tough on crime!"
This is what it looks like when the bully tattle-tales. Then, when Guergis, and likely Jaffer go down as the sacrificial livestock (maybe he'll pay them off) and he'll come out looking like the guy that did the right thing, being all tough on crime and all.
As for Harper not doing things illegally - how do you explain the little Geneva Convention issue? (Of course, we have no *proof* of that either, it's all blacked out, but we can work on the assumption based on the evidence at hand.)
I will point out my comments yesterday.
Todays revelation.
"The Star on Saturday reported a member of the group, Nazim Gillani, who claimed to be a former banker for the Hells Angels, had said he had gone out with Guergis and Jaffer last fall. It’s not clear if Guergis knew about Gillani’s background."
