Today marks the date, 93 years ago, that the Battle of Vimy Ridge commenced.
The Battle was part of the Battle of Arras, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, during the First World War.
The objective of the Canadian Corps was to take control of the German-held high ground along an escarpment (the ridge) at the northern most end of the Arras Offensive. This objective was achieved against stiff German resistance.
The success of the Canadian Corps in capturing Vimy Ridge was due to a mixture of technical and tactical innovation, meticulous planning, powerful artillery support, and extensive training.

My grandad was in WWI, France. He was gassed and had a permanent injury to one of his legs. Because of being gassed, he never felt very good all of his life.
Interesting that only Vimy Ridge counts. My grandad went through hell for nothing it seems.
The fact that you are here to tell the story is evidence he didn't go through hell for nothing.
There was talk of commemorating all the soldiers of WWI after the last veteran of that war passed on. That happened earlier this year but he and his family did not want that.
I suppose this date will have to do.
FWIW my own grandfather was too young to go to that war. He was however old enough to work in a mine during that time. He might have been 12.
There are millions of stories like that. Help keep them alive.
