Being a victim of crime tends to make people more "tough on crime". But getting arrested, or having a family member arrested, makes someone realize that procedural protections of an accused at trial are important.
And the Canadian system is not, despite what many suggest, especially favorable to accused.
A statistic worth repeating -- out of 100 charges laid 3 result in acquittals. That is a number that tends to surprise people who are not criminal lawyers but the fact is aquittals are very rare.

That might work if it was a wrongful conviction but if I'm driving drunk in Quebec, I know I'm breaking the law and I accept the consequences.

BS James.............the accused has all of the rights and the victim/s have none.
To summarize, 3% of arrestees are not-guilty while 100% of muggees are totally innocent. The trade-off in rights seems awfully skewed towards the 97% of guilty muggers, and when you calculate in that very few crimes are ever prosecuted, and that when they are they are usually given a bulk discount in the Canadian system, it seems downright nuts to worry so much about the criminals in society.
