Before we jump to the conclusion this is an "honour" crime let's learn the facts?
It does sound more like a parent temporarily going insane -- and I don't minimize the dreadfulness of the crime by saying that -- than anything else. Put otherwise, if the family came to Canada from, say, Portugal, would the potential of "honour" crime be raised so quickly?
Honour crimes are, as I have written elsewhere, a form of terrorism designed to control and intimidate women -- if this is an honour crime it is a serious matter, but let's find out first:
From the Globe:
"A woman alleged to have stabbed her daughter in the head in a so-called “honour” crime – apparently because the 19-year-old arrived home late – will undergo a psychiatric evaluation to see whether she's fit to stand trial.
Johra Kaleki, 38, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday but her lawyer argued successfully that she should be dispatched to a psychiatric hospital for a 30-day evaluation instead.
Lawyer Tom Pentefountas told Quebec court that an evaluation was necessary and, after grudgingly divulging some details of his case, he managed to convince Judge Serge Boisvert.
Police suspect the attack on the teen, who is now in hospital, was an “honour” crime. One expert says it's the 13th case of its kind in Canada since 2002."

I will give you this much, being a follower of islam tends to make a person appear insane.
islam is a violent oppressive political ideology that is forced upon its followers.
One could argue that islamic suicide bombers are insane. It is an act of insanity that they preform for their god. Their god is big on violence and insane rules.
Perhaps allah should be the one on trial, not the mother who was only following his orders.
First off.The "expert" is wrong. This is not the 13th case of its kind since 2002.There have been more than that.
"..if this is an honour crime it is a serious matter.."
Why?
I view it serious either way as you do but no more so if it is an "honour" crime.
Temporary insanity is a crock. Most of us from time to time lose it or "snap" but we control our urge to become distructive. If someone cannot be prevented from stabbing someone, let alone their own child, then they clearly cannot be free in our society. There is nothing temporary about it. It could happen again and probably has happened in the past.
Honey Pot...
Sorry "Honey", but you're an f'n moron. Typical ignorant redneck. Islam's God is the same God as your's (Christian). Also the same God as Judaism. All three religions share the same prophets, and pretty much the same shared history and historical sites and Biblical stories - based in a Holy Land they all claim.
This story is really just ignorant media calling this something it isn't. It surely is someone doing something insanely stupid - in a temporary lapse, a moment of passion. Remember the crazy fathers with their shotguns when their daughters came home late on the Prairies? Doesn't justify the action at all.
Sometimes stupidity almost surprises me. Then again, we're a big country and ignorance is not patented.
ps: I'm not a Muslim. Just someone with a level, balanced, and non-hateful head on my shoulders.
You once wrote that the Spanish Armada was an act of terrorism against England. Not only is such thinking dangerously ahistorical, it is deeply ridiculous and should be enough to make any thinking person question who and what you deign terrorism.
Of course for the right-wing to convince people we are in a civilizational war they need to bring attention to the particular insidiousness of Islam and highlight Muslim crimes.
In northern India both Sikhs and Hindis have been persecuted for murdering female family members. A few years ago a women in BC hired a hitman to murder her daughter who had fled back to India with a man from a lower class. They were Sikhs.
Until quite recently here and even more recently in Southern European countries like Spain and Italy, a husband could not be charged for raping his wife. That was a legal impossibility. Husbands were rarely charged for assaulting their spouses. Orthodox communities of all faiths are notoriously tough on females who violate their norms. You don’t think no polygamous Mormon father has ever murdered his daughter, or some had-core orthodox Jewish dad, or Evangelical Christian?
What we need is more education. New Canadians and old, whatever their backgrounds, have to understand what is and is not acceptable behaviour. And not in the crass and vulgar way the conservatives did with their handbook for new citizens. And women have to have options such as women’s centres and support and women have to know how to access those options.
Unfortunately most of the people who follow these issues really only want another stick with which to beat Muslims.

Well Western Grit.
I am not sure who the moron is. The article clearly states that the police think it is an honour crime. Blaming the media for reporting the facts makes you look stupid. Join the club dude.
"Balanced"? My ass.
I sense a general resentment with rural Canadins or "westerners" (Western Canadians that is). This attitude will not regain the support Liberals need should they wish to once again call themselves a national party.
Is this the culture war the strategist was talking about?
Western Grit is right and wrong. Hes wrong that it is the "ignorant media". I watched a clip of the police making the statement last night. It was the media reporting on what the police said, not the media adding its own commentary.
He and Morton are correct that, at least on the facts released so far, there isn't enough to conclude that it was an "honour" crime. In fact I'm not really sure that "honour" crime is a particularly useful expression. It seems that any crime committed because the victim failed or refused to conform to prevailing community/religious/social norms is deemed to be an "honour" killing. But restoring "honour" is not always the driving factor behind the act. Traditional values may be at the root of a crime but that is distinct from "honour".
In this case the link to "honour" is even more tenuous as it isn't really a community/religious/social norm that the victim transgressed. It sounds like she simply didn't follow household rules. Coming home late doesn't "dishonour" a family.
All killing (or in this case stabbing) is repugnant IMHO and aside from self-defence should by and large be treated the same. Motive should only enter into the equation insofar as it is evidence of (but not the same as) mens rea. I've never really been a fan of increased sentences for hate motivated crimes for that matter. Nor am I a fan of increased sentences for "honour" crimes.
Western Grit, now that is a an oxymoron if I ever heard one. You are barking up the wrong tree. I ain't got no god, so it is not like I am playing favorites. I see all the gods as potentially dangerous, just some are crazier and much more violent than others.
Allah takes the prize for being the most oppressive and violent. JC, Sophia, or even Seth the snake god don't hold a candle to him.
Allah makes his followers insane and using logic, your own brain, is going to get you a fatwa. Not nice things, sort of like having the mafia putting a contract out on you, where every other muslim is ordered to kill you, and if they don't, they don't love their god, and they get a contract, I mean fatwa put out on them.
When you would kill your child because you believe that will make your god happy, that means there is something wrong with you, your religion, and that your god is whacked out.
It was an attempted honour killing, and it needs to be talked about here in Canada. Someone has to tell the muslim's that ain't kosher, here in Canada.
