Jer. 22:16 "Did not your father eat and drink, and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. He pled the cause of the afflicted and needy; then it was well. Is that not what it means to know Me?" declares the LORD.

Note that he pled the case of the afflicted and needy, he didn't stick is hand in everybody's pocket and force them to help the afflicted and needy. For it would appear that even God believes that people should give as they see fit, maybe to face the consequences of it later, but to force everyone to pay wasn't on the agenda.

Good point -- you do chairty to show faith and not because you are forced -- acts display faith -- and forced charity is no charity at all
