Terror in Toronto - Time to Panic?

Now, if the Feds credibly thought we could have, say, a dirty bomb why did we seek to have the G20 in downtown Toronto? Or, is this merely mission creep -- totally out of control spending because no one put a limit on what was to be done?

"For now, the soldiers of JTF2 are plotting and preparing for every eventuality. It could be a hijacked airplane or a subway bombing like the one that killed 52 and injured some 700 in London as British Prime Minister Tony Blair hosted the 2005 G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland.

It could be a dirty bomb made of black-market nuclear, chemical or biological materials that G8 leaders are looking to eliminate, or a conventional bomb made of 1,600 pounds of ammonium nitrate like the one the RCMP feared was being plotted when an unknown man made the suspicious fertilizer purchase earlier this week.

Terrified residents near Brockville, Ont., got a dead-of-night glimpse into JTF2's training regimen last month when soldiers—later confirmed by town officials to have been members of the elite and secretive unit—stormed an abandoned Christian school on the shores of the St. Lawrence River.

Richard VanBeek, a married father of two, heard three loud blasts on May 12 at 11 p.m. It was followed at 2:30 a.m. by more blasts and machine gun fire and wrapped up around 4:30 a.m. the next day with a final burst of gunfire. When he went to investigate, police had blocked off the road on either side of the former school.

Other residents saw soldiers dressed in dark clothing crawling around in the fields near the school, VanBeek said. They were clearly carrying rifles, and the shocked parents secreted their children away in basements, unaware that they were witnessing a military training exercise"

If all of these were realistic possibilities in downtown Toronto, then you would have to say that it was the height of irresponsibility to locate the G20 there. Because the cost of preventing such an attack would be so large no responsible government would want to pay it.
