Canada looks more and more likely to stay in Afghanistan

Assuming Liberal support remains for a limited training presence it seems likely that there will be Canadian forces in Afghanistan after the existing withdrawal date. Certainly Parliamentary approval would be available:

"In an attempt to head off more bad publicity on the international stage, Mr. MacKay said yesterday that Canada is considering NATO requests to keep hundreds of troops in Afghanistan to train that country's army and police force.

...
David Petraeus, the U.S. general who is currently commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, has said there is a need for 900 trainers, without which there will be no transition to Afghan government control. Canada is understood to have been asked to provide around half of those trainers, to be based "behind the wire" on a compound in Kabul. The Liberal Party has already indicated its support for such an initiative."

There's no good reason to remain in Afghanistan. We should be withdrawing.
