Humanity is at its best when most free. This will be clear if we grasp the principle of liberty. We must recall that the basic principle is freedom of choice, which saying many have on their lips but few in their minds.

Though I appreciate the sentiment to a degree, I am always a little suspicious of quotes concerning freedom from a man whose work has been a cornerstone of the Catholic Church which has gone to such lengths to undermine basic human freedoms.

Well, where you stand affects what you say and what you see. Dante was a complex man. His work created modern Italian and to a degree the modern world
