Flooding in Manitoba worse

I spoke to someone this morning who said in many places people were going to spend Easter laying down sandbags. It seems every year there is a bad flood but this year is specially bad.

The flooding is an excellent example of why the 'every man for himself' approach of the conservatives fails.

You cannot rely on the marketplace to provide flood protection. Grand Forks tried that and the city was basically destroyed as a result. Flood protection is civic infrastructure, and required a government to support.

I wrote an article about that once, 'Everyday Socialism' - http://www.downes.ca/post/348 - it is a wisdom that the Liberals lost when they deposed Jean Chretien and went on their current disastrous run.
