The Canadian government said Monday it would legislate flight attendants back to work if last-ditch contract talks broke down, citing concerns that a strike at the country's largest airline would damage a still-fragile economy.
Comrade Joseph Stalin would be proud of Comrade Stephen Joseph Harper. We must not allow the vagaries of Capitalism and the Invisible Hand of the Free Market to threaten the well-being of the State. The State and its highly-trained political apparatchiks will dictate the only price for labour acceptable in Canada. The politburo will continue managing the Economy until our workers' efficiency and quality achieves that of the Soviet Union.
As part of the next phase of Canada's Economic Action Plan!, the Conservatives will declare shit-shoveling over for all Canadians. Through the wisdom of their central government planning, half the time there will be no shovel, and the other half, there will be no shit. (and should an unfortunate error occur, they have hundreds of thousands of temporary foreign labourers they can pay to fix it)
Hmm, can Air Canada hire replacement workers or has some government removed the rights of the employer to hire whomever they want? No. Can the employer fire strikers and hire new employees? No. Can the employees decide they dislike their working conditions so much the would rather quit? Yes.
There is no forced work here, the employees can leave anytime they want. The only rights that have been stripped are the rights of the employer. It seems to me that the union can strike, cripple the business and the business has absolutely no ability to continue thanks to certain "progressive" governments in the past.
I am not in favour of government getting involved in labour disputes but if left wing governments continue to hobble the employers then I guess right wing governments will think it's alright to legislate the workers.
Oh, and please don't sue me Dr. Dawg. I'll happily apologize for disagreeing with you if necessary. In fact, I'll do it right now. I apologize most sincerely for any remark that may have disparaged the good character of Dr. Dawg, Ms. Meow, John Baglow, or any other pseudonym, sock puppet, or identity used by that person.
Having read this I believed it was rather informative. I appreciate you spending some time and effort to put this information together. I once again find myself spending a lot of time both reading and commenting.

And thus workers are stripped of their rights.
I thought forced work was effectively slavery? Turning back the clock, once again, in Harper's Canada.

If Canadians wanted an extremist left wing opposition they'd have voted NDP... Oh wait, they did.
The view that this action is similar to slavery is so utterly stupid that it defies a serious rebuttal.
Until the Liberals find the center again it will stew as the third party.
