My own thoughts on the Livent appeal

There will be howls that the sentences are too short.

I disagree.

The two convicts are not young men and a sentence of several years is a long sentence for anyone. Picture being locked away, your freedom of movement gone even for a week -- it's not a lot of fun. Moreover, the convictions themselves are enough to make both men pariahs for business regardless of any sentence. Anyone considering a fraud and seeing the sentences would certainly think twice about punishment.

The American practice of enormous sentences -- sometimes many times a normal lifespan -- is mindless. If anything the absurdity of such sentences diminishes their seriousness.

The real problem is not the sentences but the length of time it took to get the trial and appeal. But that's another post -- see a few days back on the blog.

A family and most of Sparwood BC would probably disagree with you. Most would say that some sentences are not sufficient.

I would do five years for half a billion dollars

Um Ridenrain, are you trying to tie the incident in Sparwood with Garth Drabinsky and Livent? How on earth do you come to such a statement? That's like saying that a person jaywalking in Chicoutimi is related to car theft in Surrey.

The length of time to get to the trial and appeal might well have been a strategy of the defendants well paid lawyers. (see an earlier posting of yours on this point).

The amount of money involved is unfathomable for most humble people. This is truly a greedy and unscrupulous individual. He should never get out.

I have no doubt that with the personalities involved there was never a thought they'd get caught and if they did they believed the justice system was being run by a bunch of lackies.

The personalities involved here remind me of the Anthony Weiner character. Their actions are never accountable, they believe.
