Quebec Liberals give Jean Charest 97 per cent support in confidence vote

Quebec Liberals delivered a major shot of support on Saturday to their leader, Premier Jean Charest.

About 2,500 party delegates handed Charest a confidence vote of 97 per cent during the weekend-long gathering in Quebec City.

"Together we will write this page in history, we will draw the future of Quebec," he told supporters after the results were announced.

It was a comforting result for a man whose leadership came under fire almost a year ago.

The party failed to retain its majority government in the March 2007 general election.

The Liberals won 48 of the province's 125 seats, compared to 41 for the populist, right-wing Action democratique du Quebec and 36 for the Parti Quebecois.

Many observers predicted the result would trigger the end of the premier's political career.

The confidence test was Charest's first as leader since 2000, when 95 per cent of delegates supported him.
