Shocking knife attack in Vancouver

"Vancouver's crime rate is nearly 2 1/2 times that of Toronto. This is almost entirely because of the chronic crime arising from the often mentally unstable, drug addicted community in Downtown Eastside -- the VPD has proposed numerous ways to combat this menace with little support. Perhaps now someone will listen?"

Teen stabbed in unprovoked attack at Vancouver bus stop: police

VANCOUVER (CBC) - A 16-year-old girl was recovering in hospital Monday after being stabbed Friday morning in Vancouver while waiting for the bus.

The teenager, who has not been publicly identified, was waiting at a stop at Granville Street and King Edward Avenue shortly before 9 a.m. PT when a woman walked up to her and stabbed her in the belly, police said.

The woman then boarded the King Edward bus, police said.

A woman on the bus was arrested. Police said they found a knife in her bag.

Vancouver police said the woman who was arrested and the teen do not know each other, nor had there been any kind of exchange between them.

"It's very shocking. This was just completely random. The girl had no interaction with the woman," Const. Tim Fanning said.

The teen is expected to fully recover, Fanning said.

Janet Wen Cho, 22, from Vancouver has been charged with attempted murder.
Investigators said mental illness is being examined as a possible factor.

My friend was in a dance class with Janet Wen Cho at the University of British Columbia all of last year. Janet displayed strange behaviours such as writing in a notebook when upset during conversation and muttering under her breath. She was also arrested at a separate dance school previously for theft. I don't know about drugs, but from seeing her at a year end dance performance I was immediately aware that something was very wrong with this woman. She wore barely more than a bra and pants on stage (unlike the other performers in costume) and basically just stared off into space without dancing.

very sad

I've known Janet for a few years, she's a student at UBC. She hasn't ever used drugs. She's certainly not a drug addict - I think that making that statement is pretty classist and ignorant.
