McCain picks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate

Good choice for McCain -- someone young, fresh and a woman from an environmentally aware State. That said, she has some baggage especially on abortion. I suspect she will draw a lot more support than Biden -- we have a real election Folks!

DENVER - John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential running mate Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed Mccain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin is a self-styled hockey mom and political reformer who has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

C'mon... you're serious?

She's involved in an ethics scandal in Alaska. She’s under investigation from investigators that she abused her office by pressuring the state Public Safety Commissioner to fire an Alaska state trooper involved in a rough divorce from Palin’s sister.

The pick also shows McCain threw the "lack of experience" argument against Obama completely out the window. This was a desperation hail Mary pick, in my view.

Ok...so name one politician that doesn't have something to hide or who hasn't done anything like that before? Politicians are all the same. No matter who they are!

The ethnics scandal isn't the most important tidbit about Palin, though. She supported the "Bridge to no where" and most importantly, she supported the use of earmarks in order to sponsor infrastructural construction out in Alaska. This is a policy that conflicts directly with McCain's fiscal conservative view that earmarking should be eliminated entirely.

This move is meant to fire up the grassroots Republicans and add flare to the ticket, but I think it'll harden female Democrats into the Obama column if anything, due to the total cynicism of the blatant pandering involved. Obama's campaign is once again on the momentum, big time, this is McCain's attempt at countering that momentum. Hurricane Gustav might make the Palin move a major bust, however.

She married her high school sweetheart; is a former runner-up Miss Alaska; and mother of 5 children; her eldest is currently serving in Iraq and the youngest, who has Down's Syndrome, was born earlier this year. It'll be amazing to see if they actually pull it off. I confess that I don't know much about her politics, but I think the "idea of her" will likely sell. You couldn't dream up a bio like that if you tried!
