Deal reached on financial markets bailout

A highly unpopular but necessary step.

WASHINGTON — Congressional leaders and the Bush administration reached a tentative deal early Sunday on a landmark bailout of imperilled financial markets whose collapse could plunge the nation into a deep recession.
