Pranksters take over online petiton to keep Stéphane Dion

There is an on-line petition seeking to keep Stéphane Dion as Leader of the Liberal Party. Now, of course, he is the Leader and will remain so until the Leadership vote but the petition suggests he ought to stay on afterwards.
In the words of the petition:

Stéphane Dion is a Leader

Sadly the actual petiton seems to be more of a joke than a serious attempt to engage the Party. So we see these names and comments:

471. M.Ignatieff: "Stephane, we didnt get the job done"
467. Bob Rae: GET OUT!
463. Do U. Gettit: Dion and Liberals deserve each other!

462. S Dion: Dions his real character shone through when he refused to accept responsibilty for the election loss. This guy has no character

445. Green Shaft: Shift to the right

444. Jack Layton: We should team up.

And all this is a shame because Stéphane Dion is a true Liberal and a man who deserves credit for taking some difficult decisions, especially recently. He is an honourable man and someone who will be long remembered as such; he deserves better than silly nonsense.

The petition is here if you want to look at it:

Mr.Morton what do you expect from an online petition? It can be people from across the globe who have no idea where Canada is. It can be teenagers fooling around.I never believed online petitions. The best ones I think are the one's where we are face to face and sign it live. I've seen the so called petition and there is a lot more jokers on there then what you have posted.

Agreed -- that's the point though -- it's just silly!

The petition was set up in good faith. it highly commends Dion in most comments. Sadly others choose to ruin the great attempt. I wish the author has written some of the remarkable comments.

I am one of Mr. Dion's supporters in the Liberal Party. A letter that I wrote to Doug Ferguson, National President of the LPC was used as the basis of the petition text (although I am NOT the person who posted the petition on the internet).

The petition and other efforts to support Mr. Dion were undertaken BEFORE his press conference Monday Oct 20. Since then Mr. Dion has decided to resign as leader following a leadership convention this spring. Although I was disappointed that we are losing Mr. Dion as leader, I understand and support his reasons for doing so. The petition is therefore outdated and no longer reflects how I feel. I have asked the site hosting the petition to delete it. Unfortunately as of now it is still on-line and it is being used by Conservatives to try humiliate Mr. Dion and his supporters.

The fact that Canwest (it was CTV and the National Post which broke the story) are talking about the petition now is yet another signal that they are trying to sow dissension within the LPC and undermine Mr. Dion. Why do you suppose it is that Mr. Dion scares Canwest so much? Why is it so important to them that he resign immediately? Why does Canwest and the Conservative Party spend all their time attacking Liberals instead of promoting their own ideas in a positive manner? I think we all know why. It is because they know a true leader when they see one. And it is because they do not want Canadians talking about THEIR ideas for the country.

I am sorry that our country was deprived of a real leader. I remain involved with the Liberal Party however because whomever we select as leader will be a much better choice for Canada than Stephen Harper.
