I do think we need to let Dion leave gracefully NOW, and if possible move forward the leadership decision to mid-January -- I'm fine with either a caucus only vote or a one-member, one-vote method, due to the circumstances. You see, I believe Harper has examined the situation and noted that his best chance for a majority is under Dion's watch. He didn't get it legitimately (which says a lot about what people think of Harper) and is now trying to create impressive cracks in Liberal ranks. I don't think he's succeeding to his liking. This gambit of his, turning the sitting into a zoo, ignoring the economy, then forcing the G-G to back him or face mob rule (which his members are out there formenting during their Christmas break!) is also possibly a death knell for Harper. It's his last powerplay but if the public doesn't get on side, and if we're able to respond with a strong new leader, who won't have faced 18 months of negative ads, we can roll out a positive campaign that will bring light to a greatly exasperated public. But we need to act quickly and look like the party that is ready to lead the country out of the wilderness.
Stephen Harper just had a near death experience, and he's not going to let that happen again if he can help it. I fully expect him to engineer a trip to the polls before our scheduled leadership convention. I therefore agree with using an alternative but fair mechanism for selecting our new leader as early as possible, and that includes a vote of caucus. Harper couldn't get his majority in the wake of the sponsorhsip scandal, and he couldn't get it against Stéphane Dion, a hapless leader, albeit an excellent parliamentarian and great Canadian. He's not going to wait for us to install either Mr. Rae or Mr. Ignatieff, both of whom would be much stronger leaders than he has faced to date.
I am an independent who is against the coalition. If the coalition does take place however, I would support only Dion as PM because no one outside the Liberal party knows who these potential PMs are. I don't want to open the paper and read that some guy I don't know is my Prime Minister. If they did that, I would never consider voting Liberal again.
