Whatever Harper says ...

I have to say I disagree with those who say the Prime Minister should not be saying the economy is in deep trouble.

It is.

My complaint is that he should have been saying the economy was in danger long ago -- remember the Economic Update?

That said, none of the major political leaders foresaw just how bad things would get. Perhaps the Prime Minister could say some hopeful stuff ("we have nothing to fear" etc etc) but realistically whatever he says he'll be slagged.

PM's pessimistic talk makes bad situation worse, critics say

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper was accused yesterday of exacerbating the economic downturn by spreading pessimism when he should be taking a leadership role by disbursing hope.

Mr. Harper, who said in a television interview on Monday that he has never seen such uncertainty about the future, came under fire for giving in to fear at a time when Canadians need their Prime Minister to offer a more positive outlook – both to relieve anxiety and to keep consumers spending.

It seems to me that Steve recently discovered the civil service; the folks who actually paid attentin during economics 101. I'm quite certain the mandarins were calling things very acurately for a very long time but, reality flew in the face of a Harpers need for an image of Christ like infalability and Steve does come first, doesn't he?

I remember Harper's 2007 Christmas message when he said that he thought 2008 was going to be a tough year due to economic instability worldwide. That is why they took preem[tive steps like fast tracking the second GST cut and tightening up some financial institution regulations.

I also remember headlines from people like McCulloch accusing him of fear mongering.

He can't win can he.
