Martin Luther King Jr's birthday

Today is Martin Luther King's birthday. One of the many websites devoted to Dr. King is a Canadian site http://www.martinlutherking.ca/ and it has many links, one of them to a speech given by Frederick Douglas about voting rights.

On of the passages is of, sadly, enduring value:

It is plain that, if the right belongs to any, it belongs to all. ... . If black men have no rights in the eyes of white men, of course the whites can have none in the eyes of the blacks. The result is a war of races, and the annihilation of all proper human relations.

I'm just finishing reading Frederick Douglas autobiography (his last one). The language used is a little ponderous but well worth the read.

WTF,
Agreed -- remember he was writing in another time -- and to think he grew up as a slave? Such talent -- and so wasted (well, until he became free)
