Alf Apps for LPC President?

If the rumor mills are true, my old college mate Alf Apps is going to run for President of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Now, I am not impartial because Alf and I go way back, but I clearly remember, at UWO, as Student Council President, Alf organizing the largest rally of the 1980 federal election - five-thousand students came out to support Pierre Trudeau in his now famous 'comeback' campaign. I was there holding a sign!

Alf is the sort of guy who sets goals and achieves them -- should he run for President I expect he'll (a) be elected and (b) take the Liberal Party back to it's glory days of being the natural governing party of Canada.

Justin Trudeau ‘more celebrity than seasoning', says Ignatieff adviser (Alfred Apps)

A senior adviser to the Michael Ignatieff Leadership Campaign has taken a broadside shot at Justin Trudeau, advising the younger Trudeau to restudy his father's thinking on nationalism and labelling him “perhaps more celebrity than seasoning”.

In an email circulating an 11,500-word essay first posted to a Liberal party blog, Toronto lawyer and Liberal leadership convention delegate Alfred Apps slams Justin Trudeau's argument against a nation of Quebec as shallow, and concludes that, if Pierre Trudeau were alive today, the former Prime Minister would side with Mr. Ignatieff (on enshrining Quebec nationhood in the Canadian constitution).

“If the young Trudeau wants to make an intelligent, rather than merely intelligible, contribution, he would be well advised to read again what his father wrote and study what he did,” Mr. Apps wrote.

The pair crossed paths in Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport on Nov. 1 and had a 15 minute discussion on “the question of Quebe”, Mr. Apps wrote in the circulated email.

“In the course of that, I was struck by two things: the shallowness of his arguments were and how tenaciously he held on to them,” Mr. Apps states.

In the blog essay, he says Justin Trudeau has given “one of the few principled interventions” in the debate over whether Quebec should be a nation, but Mr. Trudeau's comment that nationalism is an old idea is “dead wrong” for today's Canada.

“In that charming off-hand style so reminiscent of his father, although girded with perhaps more celebrity than seasoning, the young Trudeau tried to dispense with the matter quickly and finally,” Mr. Apps wrote.

“But he remains living proof that it is nigh impossible for an adoring son to escape the shadow of a brilliant father, even when day has turned to night. Pierre Trudeau, in holding the line against Québec nationalists, had the formula absolutely right for his time. But Justin Trudeau has got it dead wrong for ours.”

A original essay was posted on the blog of Jason Cherniak, a Toronto lawyer who is the Stéphane Dion blog campaign co-chair, and York region area director for the Liberal Party of Canada.

Alf is a great guy and I look forward to supporting him and seeing him revitalize the party.

I hope he is running.

OK, I like Alf, and not just because we have a history together. He's a solid guy and will be good for the Party.

So the rumour is true!
Alf Apps is running and the Iggybots are pushing Doug Ferguson aside.
Too bad Doug's not running again.
Any comments on the other candidate, this Mike Crawley fellow?

Mike is a good guy and would be a fine President also. I'm backing Alf, if he runs, but either of him or Mike would be great! (Also, IggyBot sounds like something out of a James Bond film ... it's kinda cool as a name -- doubt intended so but whatever)

IT's no rumour....and Doug sent an email long ago that he isn't seeking re-election. Crawley has already been doing voicemail drops to members.

Mike Vrawley just dropped out -- I still say he would have been good but Alf will be splendid

Why does all of this seem very familiar?
Bob and Dominic drop out and Iggy wins by default.
Mike and Doug drop out and Alf Apps wins by default.
I hope this is NOT a trend! It is not healthy for the liberal party to have leaders by default.
