Hamilton workers protesting the closing of the Stelco mills

I still find it hard to imagine Hamilton without the Stelco mills. Growing up in Hamilton the steel mills were a constant and an absolute. I suppose times change but it is sad... (Thanks to my brother for the photograph)

I read somewhere that the closing is only temporarily. Is there any truth to this?

A stealthy step closer to Buy American steel policy?

It isn't all THAT surprising. Stelco was no longer Canadian owned but American owned. They were bought out some time in the last 2 years, I think it was. So this just makes the "Buy American" all that much easier - to keep it in the States to only pay U.S. workers, etc. The profits have always been going to the U.S. not Canada since it was bought out.

Yes, there was talk of the closing being temporary but once something this big shuts down it's really difficult to start up again & I doubt it will.

It's sad to see Stelco shut down. It was a Canadian icon that lost it's status as such when it was sold.
