It's actually quite frustrating. Cellphones are wonderful but a payphone is much clearer and easier to hear. However, I suppose the economics have destroyed payphones -- try to find one and you'll be surprised. They have all gone! James Morton
This is a concern for people of low income who haven't a phone, landline or cell. Used to be that they could leave the number of a nearby pay phone with a prospective employer. The only option left is email, which won't work in communities still without Internet service.
a few are left but not many. When you do find one, you'll find the cost is now $0.50 so you'll need 2 quarters! There are times when pay phones are needed. There are still areas a scant 2.5 hours from Toronto that do not have cell service (believe it or not) and pay phones in these areas are required as much for safety as for convenience.

Payphones are few and far inbetween these days. I wonder where Superman goes to change now:(
