Using Google Latitude and a little ingenuity your friends can track your cell phone to a location within 3 metres. I recently saw a production order where someone was being tracked by their AirMiles card! And don't even consider the information on Facebook!
The truth is that being anonymous is not really an option (save see below) and Big Brother isn't the State -- it's everybody else!
(To truly disappear you have to not use any of the obvious internet resources; buy disposable cellphones for cash; not use debit cards; pay for everything in cash money. Not easy!!!)

Scary when you think about it....
Quite scary. Tracking Air Miles card? Yikes? I have a friend who is extremely diligent in this regard. He pays cash and gives an assumed name, and fake postal code when buying electronics, lest he be tracked. He does not participate in any loyalty programs for the same reason.
Of course, his brother, had his identity stolen and it took years to clear up, so this probably explains it. Very different world from 20 years ago.
