Dhalla affair doesn't pass smell test

Interesting piece from tomorrow's Post. Before the feeding frenzy gets too wild, let's let the actual investing be complete. Let's see the rest of the story -- link to full article:

Don Martin: Dhalla affair doesn't pass the smell test

Being young, ethnic, female, ambitious and camera-friendly should be the dream ingredients of Canadian political star power.

But in federal politics, they make you a juicy target.

Ruby Dhalla is the Liberal MP at the epicentre of an incredibly nasty smear campaign as she moves to fight allegations by a pair of Philippine nannies who accuse her of making them work too hard doing menial tasks beyond their job description.

If the accusations are proven true, with direct links to MP Dhalla, she’s a goner. But there’s something unseemly about Liberals launching an internal whisper campaign and Conservatives going on the public attack against Dhalla before she’s had time to defend her name. And there’s precious little evidence to suggest this notorious workaholic has ever refused the call of Liberal duty by her leader or anyone else.

Something doesn’t smell right in having two former nannies step forward a year after they left the Dhalla family’s employment to suddenly complain about conditions that don’t seem unusually onerous for immigrant workers.

Perhaps I’m being excessively suspicious, but a Conservative hit squad has taken aim at Dhalla for more than a year and her opponent in the last and next election, Parm Gill, has his website up and is a regular tagalong with Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.

It doesn’t pass the test of name-ruining scandalous legitimacy, but such is the price for being a star political target.

- she has been the target of certain suddenly discovered videos from her younger years, just before the convention

- this comes out just after the convention

- there just happens to be a Parliamentary immigration committee meeting (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/politicalbytes/2009/05/a_forum_for_ruby_dhalla.html) at which Conservative Chair Tilson has said he wants Dhalla and the two nannies to appear

- the Conservatives are all primed and ready for the Commons and seem to know more about this than even the press

Just some things that make you go hmmmmm.

Wow Ted, you have that tin foil hat screwed on so tight your brains are oozing out of your ears, mouth and nose.

And the Ethics Commissioner has no jurisdiction in this case, so no exoneration for Dhalla through that avenue.

Ted Betts said...

So jurisdiction doesn't matter when the Conservatives want to haul Dhalla and the nannies up before a public hearing of a Parliamentary Committee, but when it comes to an ethics review, it matters.

I see. Conservative logic. Gotcha.

By that Ted you prove that you do not even know what the Ethics Commissioners mandate is.

Pathetic.

What if, just what if, the Ethics Commissioner has been brought in because maybe, just maybe, Dhalla has something on another MP who may be involved with the smear? That would be reason to call in the Commissioner wouldn't it?

I know this idea is far fetched, but really, does anyone really know what's going on?

The Post article also made the point (ignored by you) that Dhalla shouldn't be condemned until proved wrong in the same way as Mulroney shouldn't be condemned until proved wrong. Oops, forgot, Mulroney is a Conservative! (this article by a Liberal BTW)

Geordie:

The difference is that we have some facts in Mulroney's case that more than meritted investigation - $300K in cash in secret meetings in hotel rooms that Mulroney lied about to a judge and in his tax filings, a lawsuit brought by a corrupt man but one that highlighted the nefarious dealings he had with a Prime Minister, special secret "bonus" payments to Schreiber after he gets an agreement on Airbus - AND it had to deal with government business.

Surely you are not comparing Mulroney with Dhalla here are you? Ooops. I forgot. Dhalla is a Liberal so no circus is too small. In fact, better to get the circus as big as you can as quickly as you can before any real information or truth comes out.

This is quite interesting and very revealing.

"As of Wednesday morning, I am made to understand that no related complaint had been filed with Ontario's Ministry of Labour. Interesting that. As of Wednesday evening, the only actor in this gladiatorial forum who had asked for a review of the facts was Ms. Dhalla herself--in a note to the Ethics Commissioner."

Things that make you go hmmmm.

I love it. Liberals are clinging onto like a life raft a story on the issue from the National Post, a Tory leaning paper, while conveniently ignoring everything being reported by the Toronto Star, a Liberal leaning paper.

Oh the delecious irony! :D
