Harper announces that victims of terror can sue in Canadian courts

The comment got a good round of applause at the Canadian Jewish Congress plenary in Toronto a moment ago.

That said, think -- these won't all be claims against Hamas.

Does this mean lawsuits against the USA by disgruntled Iraqis? Or against Israel by disgruntled Palestinians? Or the UK by disgruntled Irish? How will a Court distinguish between good claim and not so good ones -- that is ones "we" (whoever we are) like and ones we don't.

The end of State immunity is not trivial.

It may be a very good idea but it's not a political bonbon.

How about changing your survey question? That one has been up for a while.

Well, the US, Israel and the UK don't do state sponsored terror don't you know. Not a single one has ever specifically targeted civilians. All of those dead civilians they have been responsible for have been "collateral damage" and therefore OK.

Only the bad guys like Iran, Iraq (oops they are the good guys now) and Syria can do state sponsored terrorism.

If such a law actually comes to pass it would be interesting to see how judges interpret it. They can be an independent lot and as you say that could result in some very unintended consequences for Mr. Harper.

He's pandering to his base. I'd think the Tamils would be the first to sue, under this new (proposed) law.

Or, this could be one of those senate-reform bills that he throws out there from time to time to vacuum some money from his donors.

They never quite think these things through, but somehow manage to convince enough people that they are right...

Only way to combat this, is to stand up to every single little idiotic Conservative policy. Their dearth of intellectual depth never ceases to amaze me.
