I don't have any information as to summer indoor temperatures but know that whole house air conditioning, now common, was a rarity in the 1960's.
How this softening of the indoor climate has affected society I cannot say -- but I feel sure there must be some effect.

A friend of mine in her 80's refuses to turn up her thermostat during the cold winter months and chooses instead to wear sweaters, etc. She also lives quite comfortably without air conditioning, but has ceiling fans, and her large house is well shaded by trees. I do believe we have become energy hogs with respect to keeping our homes over heated and over cooled.
