"We are a light unto the nations." (Isaiah 42:6)

In his speech Michael spoke of how Canada is a light unto the nations. He spoke of Canada as bringing democracy, tolerance and unity in diversity to the world.

He spoke of Canada as the nation of Vimy Ridge, Juno Beach and the Desert of Khandhar.

A nation with a vision.

Mr. Morton, this is what Isaiah 42:6 is:

I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles

I'm just confused as to what you meant in your title of this post; was Michael quoting that Bible verse, or was "we are a light unto the nations," a summation of what that particular Bible verse meant. Please clarify.

A light unto nations? In what possible respect? Lester Pearson's Canada was, so was Trudeau's, but where is this vaunted light - real or promised - among our current crop of leaders? Jim, it's not enough to simply say this stuff. There has to be substance and that simply doesn't exist with any of these guys.
