A new Mayor for Toronto -- John Tory?

John Tory would make a fine mayor and he would offer a real alternative the Mayor Miller:

Is John Tory aiming for mayor's chair, as he slams 'unnecessary' strike?

John Tory is sounding like a Toronto mayoralty candidate for 2010, taking a shot at David Miller's handling of the civic workers' strike and issuing a mea culpa for his own mistakes as former leader of Ontario's Progressive Conservatives.

"I think this entire chapter is so unnecessary," Tory said at yesterday's Conservative leadership convention, where MPP Tim Hudak was elected as his successor.

"What it reflects is both sides involved, those who serve the public as employees and those who serve as leaders, have forgotten they are public servants.

"We did not have to have it happen this way."

John Tory's strength: He can present himself as a fiscal manager.

John Tory's weakness: He needs to define his community of Toronto. How is he going to get the people of Toronto to get together to make a better community? What does he envision for the community? What about jobs, public transit, neighbourhoods, safe streets, parks, recreation, tourism, etc. Please, no Olympic bids. We're still working on the Stanley Cup.

David Miller is not the greatest fiscal manager. He is strong on the community side. He has a lot of connections to community groups who will help him get the votes on election day.

Do I want better public transit or better fiscal management? I'll take public transit because it is tangible to me. Fiscal management is too theoretical. It is probably more important than public transit. I would advise John Tory to campaign on providing better managed public transit, roads, community centres, parks, and other things. Fiscal management can be included in all those things. Remember to campaign on what kind of community you would want for Toronto. Fiscal management alone is not good enough for municipal politics. Include it among the tangible services.
