But Stephen Harper is a believer

Wafergate is more amusing than anything else. It reminds me of the Dreidlegate issue around Christmas:

MONCTON, N.B._ The Roman Catholic archbishop who administered holy communion to the prime minister last week says Stephen Harper meant no disrespect when he consumed a communion wafer during former governor general Romeo LeBlanc's funeral.

Archbishop Andre Richard, head of the Moncton archdiocese, says it's considered ``sacrilegious'' for non-believers to take part in the rite, but only if it is meant out of disrespect.

Where are you coming from on this? Which part of sacreligious don't you get James?

Its not the faux pas so much as the outright lie originally told from the PMO's communications staff, and the subsequent, still questionable adjustment to the lie when the video surfaced.

If they can lie and deflect on something as minor as this, simply imagine the pile of dung being fed from them on a daily basis about real issues of substance. Spin is to be expected, but it seems everything coming from the PMO lateley is complete fiction.

The two previous posters should gives their heads a serious shake;

National Post

The priest who delivered the homily at the funeral mass of former governor-general Romeo LeBlanc said Stephen Harper behaved properly when he took part in the communion service last week.

“The Prime Minister did consume the host; he did not put it in his pocket,” said Father Arthur Bourgeois, who had been a friend of Mr. LeBlanc for 30 years.

I think that's very gracious of Father Bourgeois to say Harper ate the wafer. I presume he was unaware of the video evidence showing the entire world the contrary.

Video evidence? That video was about as good as the quality of the Dion video, if not worse.

Get a grip.

Harper vascillates somewhere between Elmer Gantry and Elmer Fudd;
The damaging part of wafergate for Harper (other than deeply offending devout Catholics) was the (predictable) lying that followed.
