The Polls

This week brought a depressing poll. And I don't want to brush it off as a 'snap shot'. Because it shows a trend favourable to the Conservatives.

Now why?

That puzzles me -- except perhaps the fallout of the 'near election' hurt?

What do readers think?

Canada's Conservatives reclaim lead in new poll

* Conservatives reclaim slight lead over Liberals

* Prime Minister Harper seen gaining momentum over summer

* Liberal leader seen slipping off the radar over summer

OTTAWA, July 7 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative Party has regained a slight lead in popular support over the opposition Liberals and appears set to gain momentum over the summer, a poll released on Tuesday showed.

The Strategic Counsel survey, published in the Globe and Mail newspaper, put the Conservatives ahead of the Liberals for the first time since April. The poll showed the Conservatives with 34 percent support and the Liberals with 33 percent. The left-leaning New Democrats stood in third place at 15 percent.

A month earlier, Liberals stood at 34 percent and the Conservatives at only 30 percent and some other polls had also revealed growing support for Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff.

The numbers show Ignatieff's honeymoon as the new opposition leader is over, the Globe cited Strategic Counsel pollster Peter Donolo as saying.

The Cons always gain a lead when the House isn't sitting. Every summer & break it's the same. Especially summer when he & his Ministers are running around making announcements & doing photo-ops. They're, basically, the only ones the media follows at this time of year. It'll change when Parliament resumes I'm sure.

Maybe Dion had severe communications problems but he showed more integrity than our current leader. The polls reflect a growing awareness of a vacuous weather-vane who is providing continuing support to Harper and his band of thugs.

this is a G8 poll by a pollster who always like to give Harper a boost before he meets the other BIG guys...entirely bullsh@t.

Anon, you do realize Peter Donolo worked for PM Jean Chretien. Are you suggesting Peter Donolo skews the numbers to make his own (former) party look bad?

I believe you will find Mr.Donola turned CRAP when Paul Martin took over the Liberal Party to contimue the martinChretien feud.

The poll indicates that Mr. Ignatieff has to expose/discuss the failures of the Conservative government on a daily basis.

As the saying goes, "Out of sight, Out of mind!"
