Newest species


Polar bears evolved from Alaskan brown bears about 100,000 years ago, making them the world's most recently evolved large mammal species.

Brown and polar bears have been known to interbreed, and some groups of brown bears show polar-bear-like characteristics.

Thus we appear to be seeing speciation in mid-flight.
