Today in 1775 ...

Montreal - American Revolutionary General Richard Montgomery (1736-1775) landed at Point St. Charles and marched into Montreal a day after Guy Carleton evacuated the city.

All Canada except Trois-Rivieres and Quebec City was under the occupation of the Army of the Continental Congress, and the French habitants were urged to join the Revolution.

They didn't.

In the War of 1812 the French Canadian militia again repulsed American invaders.

Standard reasons explaining French Canadian support for the British crown:

Memory of the French/Indian War. Habitants served alongside French soldiers and fought against British troops and importantly, their colonial militia. Led by Geroge Washington.

The 13 colonies were believed to be virulently anti-Catholic.

British North American Act protected the Catholic religion.
