UK citizen executed in China for drug smuggling -- Canada's reaction

Granted, it's not really Canada's issue but this is a very luke warm response:

"Canada is aware of the recent execution of British national Akmal Shaikh,... Canada encourages the abolition of the death penalty internationally and also advocates full respect for international safeguards where the death penalty is in use."

One gets the sense that the government isn't all that put out by the use of the death penalty by China.
