What to do on a holiday?

I try not to think of work and read old detective books. So I am re reading Nero Wolfe stories.

But it's odd how the diabolical and brilliant villain always makes an obvious mistake.

In the story I am reading now the bad guy has spent months planning a murder. A murder on a golf course! And the killer is familiar with golf (unlike Nero or Archie). But the killer overlooks a standard practice that happens every game on a golf course (the lending of a club) and so kills the wrong person. Duh!!!

Perhaps other readers can recall mysteries where the evil genius was not so smart?
