Statement by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff on International Day of Commemoration for Victims of the Holocaust

OTTAWA - Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement today:

“Today, we stand with the international community to observe the 5th Annual International Day of Commemoration for Victims of the Holocaust, which claimed the lives of six million Jews and other victims of state-sponsored genocide.

In accordance with the United Nations General Assembly resolution, this day marks the liberation, in 1945, of the largest Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The Holocaust remains a signal moment in our shared history when we are reminded of what can happen when we allow hatred and intolerance to undermine the fundamental values of dignity, understanding and mutual respect.

Here in Canada we are reminded of how important it is to educate our children to ensure that future generations will never forget, so that such a tragedy can never take place again. The Liberal Party of Canada and its Parliamentary Caucus joins all Canadians in solemn observance of this anniversary. May we always remember.”
