Toyota. Whose story is true?

I go to my real mechanic after being told by my Toyota service department not to worry.

My mechanic says Toyota doesn't know what's wrong but the car looks ok.

But the news seems wild so I call my dealer again and am told not everything you hear is true and there's no recall.

But the Toyota.ca website has the news alert below! What's the real deal???

Toyota Temporarily Suspends Sales of Selected Vehicles

Toyota Canada Inc (TCI) announced that it is instructing Toyota dealers to temporarily suspend sales of the eight models involved in the recall for sticking accelerator pedal, announced on January 21, 2010. Toyota is making every effort to meet the needs of customers and this decision will enable TCI to coordinate activities and expedite the accelerator pedal repairs for customers as quickly as possible.

Toyota will recall approximately 270,000 vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals on specific Toyota Division models. Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats. There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

The safety of customers and restoring confidence in Toyota vehicles is our first priority. Toyota owners seeking more information are invited to contact their Toyota dealership who can determine if their vehicle falls within the affected model range for this specific condition and for additional assistance

The answer I got is from my dealership (I have a Vibe, but seeing as how the Vibe is a Matrix with a different shell, the same recall has been issued) is that Toyota has issued the recall but that they don't have a fix for the problem. Searching the recall on both consumer sites (in the US) and government sites confirms this explanation. I hope a fix comes out in the next week or so. I'd hate to unexpectedly accelerate through a stop sign because of this.

Until your dealership fesses up (and I don't see how they can be in denial, given the amount of coverage this has gotten,) the following may be helpful:

I have always had a gm truck 1965, 1970, 1976, 1990, 2006. All Union made.
I swear by GM in pick-up trucks.

Last week I bought my wife a 2007 Hyundai Sante-Fe Ltd. (A non-union vehicle) . Wow, very Sweet!

I thought of the Rav-4 or Highlander,my wife preferred the Sante fe, a good choice
