David Dodge at Montreal

David Dodge, speaking to Canada at 150 a moment ago, warned against adopting international standards that are designed to solve problems we do not have.

And that makes sense -- Canada is not the same as other countries. We face serious challenges but they are not the challenges of, say, Japan.

One peculiar problem Canada faces is low productivity. Many speakers have spoken on this -- I wonder of geography is responsible here? Regardless, on present trends, Canadians' standard of living will decline in absolute terms starting in the next decade.

A troubling point.

" low productivity"
Maybe someone should define what it is...instead of using it as copout term...

So will you have to process 5x the amount to court cases to remain productive?
Will it mean that employees will have accept salary reductions to have a firm considered "productive"?

Fair enough -- GDP is a notoriously slippery term. That's why the new "happiness" measure makes sense. Good comment!

And in other news that the MSM tries to bury well off of the front page;

With two months left to report for the 2009-10 fiscal year, the federal government has a budget deficit of $39.6 billion, whereas Finance forecast a $53.8-billion shortfall for the entire fiscal year. Should the momentum continue, it is possible the federal deficit for this fiscal year could be quite a bit smaller than projected.

The party is over for you Liberals, welcome to the wilderness.

Suicide isn't painless, is it?
