Let me first say that your one of the Liberal blogs that I look forward to and respect.
The last system wasn't broken and the registry was simply a political scheme to buy votes. It hasn't saved any lives and it's database is as inaccurate now as it was when it was started. It's sadly a criminal problem and the registry only deals with law abiding people. The mandatory five year jail term would do far more than the registry ever could do.
I dont really care one way or the other about the registry qua registry. The issue is what works and if getting rid of the registry and uping the sentences would work I am good with that. From what I understand, and the later part of the show seemed to support this, the police find the long gun registry a good thing and in that leads me to support it. But you are right, the issue is what is the right mechanic and that's all that matters -- what works?
Your broad statement that the police support the registry is erroneous.
The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police support it, but they are a political organization that receives support from the largest software contractor for the registry computer system, so I would suggesr their viewpoint be take with a grian of salt.
As an aside, the CACP is also supported by Taser Intl. So if you ever wondered about their support of energy weapon, well, now you know.
The Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers, the Calgary Police Association and the Edmonton Police Association are all on record in opposition to the registry.
Politicos support it, most "boots on the ground" do not.
