Letters to the editor

In fairness to the junior minister being raked over the coals for a staffer writing nice things to the local newspaper, is there any politico who doesn't encourage their supporters to do such letters? Indeed, Obama's team went further and (dealing with talk radio) made on-line suggestions as to radio shows to call and what to say. And in saying this I am not criticising Obama -- it's a smart use for media. I guess the real problem here is the bush league approach and the obviously nature of the letters -- you encourage your supporters to write, you don't have you Mom sign stuff under her maiden name.

Being a lawyer your language skirts the edge of libel, but doesn't cross it.

"And in saying this I am not criticising Obama"...

I don't think Liberals are capable of criticising Obama.

Bush league yes. It was like Welcome Back Kotter;Remember Epstein's letters from his mother explaining his absence. They were signed "Epstein's Mother"

Off-topic - A lot of "anonymous commenters" going around this AM accusing Liberal blogs of libel, or close to it.

On-topic.. James.. being a supporter of a politician an being encouraged to write in is a heck of a lot different then a staffer directly working for the Minister and doing the same thing - without declaring who they are or in this instance, using a pseudonym to try and conceal their identity shows a massive conflict of interest.. and I'm surprised you don't say as much.

You come close to having a meaningful comment but didn't quite get there.

Libel? What, I am sort of supportive here -- or so I thought? Whatever...

James, you're honest and fair. Wonderful to see. Indeed everyone does it. The big distinction with Mme HG was that these letters came via her paid staff. And that well.. no.
