No post on the Liberal plans to vote in underwhelming numbers on the budget?

The proposed plan, to vote against, but not in enough numbers to defeat the government, will not be successful.

People will correctly see it as cynical and hypocritical. In the worst case scenario, they will be openly laughing at the Liberal Party.

Truth is, the Liberals should be voting in favour of this budget. It's pretty much what they would do if they were in power. It's an election budget, because Harper feels he has room to deliver one, at least this year, before making the cuts we know he wants to make.

By voting against in insufficient numbers the Liberals will reveal themselves as hypocrites in two ways - by not defeating the government when they clearly have no confidence in it, and by opposing a budget most people know they actually support.

(I don't know why I give the Liberals advice... it really seems like a lost cause most days. I hope you appreciate it.)

Downes, I do appreciate it and i don't like voting in a purely symbolic way -- but I also know there isn't an election sought. So maybe a better idea is to abstain totally?

Abstaining totally would be better.

Doing something by half is always a bad idea, that's why voting against in insufficient numbers is a bad idea.

Everybody will understand that the liberals are between a rock and a hard place if they abstain; an abstention at least says (and admits) that. People will respect that.
