Pet Shop Owner Given Fine, Curfew, and Ankle Monitor for Selling Goldfish to 14-Year-Old

OK, cigarettes to minors sure, but goldfish???

UK: 66-year-old Joan Higgins has been ordered to pay a fine of $1,506 and has been given a curfew and an ankle monitor after she fell afoul of a law passed four years ago making 16 the minimum age at which a live fish can be legally purchased.

She and her son Mark were picked up as part of a police sting. Mark was given 120 hours of community service and a $1,300 fine. He claims that the boy looked "much older than 14."

"I think it´s a farce. What gets me so cross is that they put my mum on a tag - she´s nearly 70, for goodness sake... You would think they have better things to do with their time and money," said Mark.
